Plantar fascia is a medical term for tissue that starts at your heel and goes along the bottom of your foot. Damage to the plantar fascia is a common cause of heel pain. This often happens as people get older as the tissue in the plantar fascia wears out a bit and provides less of a cushion. When this injury occurs the diagnosis that is given is plantar fasciitis.
Many non-work related reasons can cause plantar fasciitis or other heel injuries. They include obesity, diabetes, running, a heavy period of activity on your feet and being flat footed. Under Illinois law if your job causes, aggravates or accelerates an injury you would be entitled to workers' compensation benefits.
In other words, you could be overweight and that may be the original cause of your heel problems. However, if you have a job that requires you to walk 6-8 miles a day and that activity aggravates your pre-existing condition then you would likely be able to recover work injury benefits.
Under Illinois workers' compensation law, the act of standing all day is not considered to put a worker at an increased risk to the general public. In other words, if you get an injury to your foot, heel or any other body part that was in part caused by standing for a long period, you likely would be denied benefits. The reason we say that is that Illinois courts have found that most people stand for a long period every day so that act isn't unique to the job. However, if your standing requires you to walk on uneven ground, wear tight fitting boots or awkward high heels, walk a great distance or perform any other activity that the average person does not experience in their usual day you would likely receive Illinois workers' compensation benefits if you suffered from plantar fasciitis. That means that 100% of your medical care would be paid for, you would receive 2/3 of your average weekly wage for your time off of work and you would be entitled to a settlement for the permanent nature of your injury.
