Every family law case is DuPage County is heard in the main Wheaton courthouse located just North of the intersection of County farm and Roosevelt Roads. There are eight (8) regular family law judges in this courthouse (including the domestic violence courtroom and paternity matters) and they handle every case in DuPage County. As a result these judges quickly become familiar with attorneys that regularly appear before the court and in our opinion the judges' end to give these attorneys better treatment than lawyers who aren't considered "regulars". If there are any contested issues in your divorce, custody or child support case, we feel you are best served by hiring a "regular."

The family law court is located on the third floor of the DuPage County Judicial Center. Preliminary Motions are heard Mondays through Wednesdays at 9:30 for pre-decree cases and 9:45 a.m. for post decree cases. Trials commence on both morning and afternoons in most courtrooms. DuPage County requires mediation in cases where litigants with children can't come up with a parenting plan within 90 days of filing for a divorce. In addition, if the parents conclude mediation without an agreement a subsequent referral is normally made to a clinical psychiatrist or psychologist who reports to Court as to what type of custody arrangement advances the "best interests" of any children involved.

We also feel that DuPage County is a somewhat tight knit legal community. Whether it be Bar Association events or after hours drinks, it is not un-common to see a tight knit group of attorneys together. This doesn't prevent these lawyers from being strong, independent advocates for their clients. However, it does at times lead to better case results and more cooperation which is all in the best interests of you the client.

Certainly there are some DuPage County family law matters where a local attorney isn't the best attorney for you. For example, if you are involved in a divorce where complex forensic accounting is involved from a business that was started in the marriage, you may find a Chicago based law firm that has attorneys that often appear in DuPage County on divorce and family law cases. You also do see a lot of Chicago divorce lawyers who go to Wheaton multiple times a week because their clients live in DuPage county, but work in the loop. The bottom line is that you should seek whatever attorney best fits your needs.
