I have a good friend who owns some bars in Chicago. He has amazed me over the years with stories of contractors who don’t return calls, miss appointments or generally speaking just do nothing to try and receive the money he wants to give them for work that needs to be done. The ironic part is that so many of these contractors also complain about the economy, lack of work, etc.
Likewise, I get about 10 calls a week from someone who tells me that they have called a bunch of law firms and no attorney will take or return their phone call. Why?
I honestly have no idea. Attorneys only make money if they have clients. You never know which phone call is going to be a case that makes you a lot of money so even if you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find your prince, why not take every call as soon as you can?
Frankly there are a lot of good attorneys who have started their own firm who just have no clue when it comes to running a business. If they take on your case they often will do a good job with the legal work, but their customer service will never be worth anything.
My two cents is that bad customer service is a big red flag whether the lawyer is good or not. If they don’t call you back within 24 hours then you probably shold find someone else.
