- Increased Penalties for Driving with a Suspended License
- Every year in Chicago, 25,000 people get ticketed for driving with a suspended or revoked license. This is not a routine traffic ticket. Driving while your license is suspended or revoked is punishable by jail time and large fines.
- Now lawmakers are proposing an additional penalty for this offense: impounding your vehicle. If this ordinance goes into effect, you could not only lose your car but face a $1,000 fee (on top of the towing and storage fees already charged at the impound lot) to get your vehicle back.
- You can’t expunge traffic offenses.
- There are four locations for Secretary of State’s formal driver’s license reinstatement hearings: Chicago, Joliet, Springfield and Mt. Vernon.
- If you Illinois driver’s license is suspended in Wisconsin or most other states, Illinois will also suspend it too.
- Driving on a suspended license can now lead to jail time.
- If you are under 21 years of age and you receive two moving violations within 24 months, your license will be suspended.
- If your license is suspended or revoked, you can petition the Secretary of State for a hardship license that might allow you to drive to work or school.
- If you have received 4 D.U.I.’s in Illinois as long as the 4th is after 1999 your license is revoked for life with no chance of reinstatement.
- You cannot expunge traffic tickets.
- You cannot expunge D.U.I.’s.
- If you get a speeding ticket in a construction zone, the minimum fine is $375. The second ticket in a construction zone would result in a $1000 fine and a suspension of your license for 90 days.
- If your license is suspended you can file for a hardship license to drive to work or school.
- In most traffic cases, a lawyer will handle the case on a flat fee basis no matter how many court appearances are required.
