No one goes into a marriage looking to get divorced. Some people that call us are ready to get divorced, others are in receipt of a petition for divorce from their spouse, but don't want it to happen. The reality is that no matter who you are, you aren't likely to finish a divorce and tell your friends what a rewarding process it was.

Divorce lawyers in general are some of the most bitter, jaded people that you will meet. If you are going through a divorce or have been through one, you know how emotional and bitter that can be. Now imagine if your client based consisted of people in that situation every single day and that most of your court appearances were contentious. That is what divorce lawyers go through in Illinois.

Because every day is contentious and clients, rightfully so, are constantly worried about their cases, we have found that some divorce attorneys in Illinois don't take their cases as personally as you would want them to. Essentially, many of them ignore the human element in divorce because they are essentially numb to it and their clients are just another case. That and the constant phone calls from worried clients leads to bad customer service and sometimes, bad results.

While almost everyone finishes a divorce and isn't thrilled with the process, there are some things that you can do to get better results:

  1. Become goal focused. If you and your lawyer don't create a list of goals it becomes more difficult to resolve a case. If a divorce is your goal or inevitable, figure out what will make you happy (or as happy as you can be) and work toward that. Part of your lawyer's role is to help you figure out your goals including things you may not be thinking of such as retirement accounts, dividing up personal property, etc.
  2. Know that everyone time you talk to your lawyer he/she will charge you. Instead of calling five times with five questions, write down all of your questions and ask them all on one day. It will be cheaper and from the lawyer's perspective will be less likely to make them consider you a high maintenance client.
  3. Before you hire a lawyer, ask them tough questions. For example: What percentage of their cases is related to divorce, how do they communicate with you about developments in your case, how often will they bill you, what can they tell you about the divorce judges in your county, etc.
