We typically only deal with Illinois legal matters, but there are some exceptions to that where we work nationwide. One of those exceptions is when someone has an IVC Filter.
IVC (Inferior Vena Cava) filters are medical devices that are implanted in the vena cava vein to filter blood clots from traveling to arteries in the lungs. For a number of different reasons, people can develop small clots that originate in the deep leg veins; the clots can break away and travel from the leg veins to the arteries in the lungs. These clots are dangerous because they block oxygen from getting to your blood, which often results in illness, brain damage, and even death.
IVC filters are new to the market. Bard Peripheral Vascular Recovery and G2 IVC filters have been proven to break or to move from their proper location to other parts of the body, including the heart, lungs, and other organs, causing injury. Literature has shown a significant statistical rate of device failure, fracture, and migration in these IVC filters. A CT scan or some other test is required to identify the problem, and if an IVC filter is found to have failed, surgery to remove the device and its broken pieces may be necessary. Sometimes, however, it is too dangerous to remove the pieces because of the risk of further injury or death.
Failure of an IVC filter can lead to the following conditions:
- Death or severe injury.
- Constant severe pain in the chest, heart, or elsewhere in the body.
- Pulmonary embolus.
- Respiratory (breathing) problems.
- Constant anxiety or worry about metal shards in the organs.
Early warning signs of device failure include sudden chest pain, or pain elsewhere in the body, following the placement of an IVC filter in your body. If you experience sudden pain, you should go to an emergency room immediately.
Certain conditions may make you more susceptible to having blood clots. These conditions include vascular disease, stroke, heart attack, obesity, bariatric surgery, trauma to the legs, fractured pelvis or leg bones, abdominal or joint surgery, joint replacements, advanced age, smoking, diabetes, lung conditions, COPD, asthma, and hypertension.
If your IVC filter has failed, you should seek the advice of an experienced attorney as soon as possible. You may be entitled to compensation for your injuries, including medical bills, emotional distress and anxiety, lost wages, and medical monitoring costs.
Even if you have not suffered an injury, according to the IVC attorneys that we know and recommend, their expert doctors believe that you should have a CT scan twice a year to monitor any potential problems.
If you or someone you know has an IVC filter and would like to find a lawyer please contact us. There is never a fee to speak with us and every lawyer that we recommend works on a contingency basis which means that there is no fee to pursue the case unless they are successful.
