The information below gives some very general information about some common shoulder problems. We are lawyers, not doctors, so if you are hurt we again encourage you to seek medical attention. If there is anything we can do for you legally, please contact us for help. All calls and e-mails are confidential and there is no cost or obligation.

Rotator Cuff
The rotator cuff is comprised of the shoulder joint which is surrounded by four muscles and their tendons. The rotator cuff itself is surrounded by an empty sac, or bursa, which helps the tendons slide. The rotator cuff is susceptible to many problems which can cause weakness, tenderness and pain.

Tendonitis and impingement syndrome
If the space between the rotator cuff and the bone above it is narrowed, the rotator cuff tendons and the overlying bursa can get squeezed. The act of being squeezed is referred to as an impingement. Impingement is was causes tendonitis.

Calcific Tendonitis
It is possible for a calcium deposit to form in the rotator cuff. This usually causes acute inflammation of the tendon and bursa. This is referred to as calcific tendonitis.

Rotator Cuff Tear
Rotator cuff tendons may tend to weaken as we get older. A rotator cuff tear can occur due to this degeneration alone, or when the weakened tendons are stressed during activities or accidents.

Arthritis
As most parts of the body, the shoulder joint can be affected by different forms of arthritis. Arthritis generally causes pain and possibly inflammation in the shoulder.

Labrum
The shoulder joint is a ball and socket joint. The socket of the shoulder joint is extremely shallow which makes it unstable. The labrum is a cartilage that forms a cup so that the arm bone can move within the joint. This cartilage makes the shoulder joint much more stable, yet allows for a very wide range of movement.

Labral tear or Bankart lesion.
A Bankart lesion is a specific type of tear that happens when your shoulder becomes dislocated. As the shoulder pops out of joint, it often tears the labrum. The tear is to part of the labrum called the inferior glenohumeral ligament.

Typical symptoms of a Bankart lesion include a catching, aching, and susceptibility to dislocation. People who sustain a Bankart injury are at much higher risk for dislocating their shoulder again. Treatment of a Bankart lesion often depends on whether or not a patient has recurrent episodes of shoulder instability.
