Quadriplegia
What is quadriplegia?
Quadriplegia is the paralysis of the body that affects both the legs and the arms, as opposed to paraplegia which affects primarily the lower body and legs.
What are the causes?
Most frequently, the cause of quadriplegia, like paraplegia, is an injury that either completely severs the neck area of the spinal cord or damages some of the nervous tissue in the cord. Quadriplegia can also be caused by cerebral palsy or by a stroke. Depending on the injury and where the damage is and how severe it is, certain parts of the body may be unaffected while other areas become permanently disabled.
Like paraplegia, the leading cause of quadriplegia is a car accident. However, other accidents, acts of violence or even sports injuries can result in quadriplegia.
Now what?
If the injury that led to the quadriplegia happened at work, you may be entitled to workers’ compensation. If it happened outside of work, it may be the result of someone else’s negligence and you may have a personal injury case that, if successful, could compensate you for your medical expenses and lost wages.
If you or a loved one have become a quadriplegic as the result of a job injury or someone else's negligence, you have a lifetime of medical care and lost wages to worry about. It's important to find an attorney that has experience with these types of cases. While there are hundreds of injury law firms in Illinois that would want a case with such a serious injury, the reality is that only a handful have a real track record of success with those claims.
